Internship Resume: What to Include and How It Reads
An internship resume is built backwards from one for someone who has already worked: education goes at the top, class projects are written as experience, and one line makes clear where you are in your degree. The company that opens an internship posting knows you will not bring ten years of experience. What it wants to know is what you study, what you can already do, and when you can start.
There is a second thing almost nobody tells you. Internship postings on OCC, Indeed, LinkedIn, and university job boards receive your file the same way as any other posting: a program converts it to text and splits it into fields before a person sees it. A student resume built on a pretty template can arrive with an empty experience section and misread education, and in a posting where every candidate has little experience, that detail can decide who gets through.
- Education at the top, with a line saying what semester you are in or whether you are already a pasante.
- Class projects, student positions, and volunteering written as experience: job title, organization, dates, and a result.
- Skills as specific tools, and your availability written out.
- One column, no photo or graphics, in PDF, so the software reads all of it.
- Write it in Word or Google Docs using this guide, then run it through the Dopplio converter to get it ready for the ATS.
Below is the detail for each point, how to write that you are a pasante, and a complete example. If you already have a resume, you can convert it to ATS format for free and see which parts do not read before you continue.
What a company looks for in an intern
Think about who reviews the posting. It is someone in HR or the head of the area who will receive the intern, and they have a short list in mind:
- That you study what the posting asks for. A bachelor's or engineering degree, and sometimes the semester.
- That you can keep the schedule. Many internships are part-time and overlap with classes.
- That you know the basic tools of the role. Excel, industry software, a language.
- That you have done something. A project, a competition, a team, a community service. Anything with a result.
Your resume has to answer those four things at a glance. And because the file goes through a system first, it has to answer them in a format the system recognizes. The details of how that reading works are in what a resume parser reads. The rule to remember here: the program recognizes an experience when it finds a job title, an organization, and a date range together. It recognizes education when it finds a degree, an institution, and dates. Anything without that shape reads as loose text.
What to include on an internship resume
In this order. The order matters because whoever reads it, person or program, starts at the top.
- Contact details. Name, city, phone, email. A professional email, not the one from high school. If you have a LinkedIn profile or portfolio, the link goes here. No photo: the layout that comes with it is the first thing that scrambles the text, and in Mexico it is not required.
- Profile, two or three lines. What you study, what semester you are in, what area interests you, and what you can do. Nothing like "I am a responsible person eager to learn." Everyone says that, and it contains no word the posting is searching for.
- Education, at the top. It is your strongest section, so it goes before experience. Degree, university, dates, and the status line (explained in the next section). If your grade average is high, include it. If you have coursework that matches the posting, one line with three or four course names is worth more than a paragraph.
- Experience, even if it is not a job. This is where you put what you did in the form of a job: a class project with a deliverable, a competition, a student association position, the family business, volunteering, freelance work. How to write them so they count is below.
- Skills. Specific tools and language level. "Excel (pivot tables)," "Python (pandas)," "AutoCAD," "English B2." Soft skills are shown in experience entries, not in a list.
- Availability. One line at the end or inside the profile: days and hours, and from when. In an internship posting, this line is read before many others.
What does not go in: date of birth, marital status, CURP (Mexico's national ID number), or references. If the company needs them, it will ask in the application form.
How do I say on my resume that I am a pasante?
With one exact line inside your education. The most common confusion on a student resume is that it is not clear where you are in your degree, and the system does not guess. Use the line that fits you:
- Still studying: Licenciatura (bachelor's degree) in Business Administration · University X · 2023 - present (7th semester, 75% of credits)
- Finished your coursework but do not have the degree yet: Licenciatura in Business Administration · University X · 2022 - 2026 · Pasante (completed coursework, degree pending), degree expected December 2026
- Already have the degree: Licenciatura in Business Administration · University X · 2022 - 2026 · Degree awarded
Three things make that line work. The full name of the degree, as it appears at your university, because that is what the posting asks for in those same words. Dates as a range, because without dates the program does not create the entry. And the status word on the same line, so the reader does not have to infer it.
If the posting says "students in their 6th semester or later" or "engineering pasantes," that line is your entry requirement. It should read in full, with no graphics around it.
Class projects written as experience
This is the part that separates a weak internship resume from one that works, and it is purely about format. Each entry needs the same four pieces as a job: job title, organization, dates, and a line with a result. The full rule, with more sources of experience that people tend to discard, is in resume with no experience.
This version does not read well:
I did a data analysis project for a class and we did well.
This version does:
Data Analyst (class project) · Applied Statistics course, University X · Feb - Jun 2026 Cleaned and analyzed a database of 2,000 records in Python and presented the results to the group; the project earned the top grade.
The first version is loose text: the system finds no job title and no dates, so it creates nothing. The second has all four pieces and is recorded as an experience. For the person who reads it later, the difference is the same: one says "I did something," the other says what, where, when, and with what result.
The same applies to a student position ("Treasurer · Sociedad de Alumnos de Ingeniería · 2025 - 2026"), a family business ("Administrative Assistant · Family hardware store · weekends, 2024 - 2026"), or volunteering. If you completed your servicio social (mandatory community service), it goes here too, with its role, institution, and dates: it is an experience with all four pieces, not a formality.
Two limits. Do not invent positions that did not exist; "(class project)" in parentheses is honest and enough. And do not inflate numbers: a modest, real result ("served 15 customers per shift") carries more weight than one you cannot defend in an interview.
Complete example: before and after
as many people submit it:
Sofía Ramírez Marketing student, responsible, creative, and eager to learn. Looking for professional internships to grow in the field. University X, Marketing. Experience: no work experience. Skills: teamwork, communication, social media, Office.
with the same real things:
Sofía Ramírez · Guadalajara, Jal. · sofia.ramirez@example.com · 33 0000 0000 · linkedin.com/in/sofiaramirez
Profile 7th-semester Marketing student with content projects and social media campaign analysis. Looking for part-time internships in digital marketing. Available Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 14:00, starting October 2026.
Education Licenciatura in Marketing · University X · 2023 - present (7th semester, GPA 9.1) Related coursework: Digital Marketing, Market Research, Web Analytics.
Experience Social Media Manager (volunteer) · Environmental Collective Z · Aug 2025 - Jun 2026 Planned and published 3 posts per week on Instagram; the account grew from 400 to 1,300 followers in ten months.
Campaign Analyst (class project) · Digital Marketing course, University X · Feb - Jun 2026 Designed and measured a Meta Ads campaign with a 500 peso budget for a local business; presented the results to the owner.
Skills Meta Business Suite, Canva, Google Analytics (basic level), Excel (pivot tables), English B2.
Notice what changed. No new experience appeared: the form did. Every entry has a job title, an organization, dates, and a result. Education states the semester and the GPA. The profile contains the words a digital marketing posting uses. And availability is written out, not inferred.
Where to apply and what happens to your file
Internships are applied for in three places: your university's job board, general portals (OCC, Indeed, LinkedIn, Computrabajo), and the careers page of the company. In all three you upload a file, and that file passes through a program before it reaches a person.
One practical detail: your university sets the length and schedule of the internship, not the posting. Check your faculty's rules before committing to a schedule, because that availability is what you will write on the resume.
That means the formatting rules for any resume apply to yours too: one column, real text, no tables or text boxes, and a PDF exported from Word or Google Docs. Student templates from Canva, with their colored sidebars and icons, are exactly the case that reads worst; the results with real templates are in Does your Canva resume pass the ATS filter?. And if you are torn between sending a PDF or a Word file, the short answer is PDF, with the details in PDF or Word resume.
How Dopplio handles it
This is the part we built, so we will be direct.
The sequence is this. First you write the resume using the guidance above, in Word or Google Docs, and export it to PDF. Then you upload it to the ATS resume converter. You first see which parts of the file the software cannot read (a split status line, a table, a header that got lost), and you get the same content in one column with real text, to edit and download. It works the same if you built it in a Canva template: it does not rewrite anything of yours, it leaves it readable.
The part that helps most with internships, where all candidates look alike, is this: paste the posting and check your resume against it. Dopplio tells you which requirements in the posting do not appear in your text, and helps you rewrite the entries so they include them, using what you actually did. It does not invent experience or numbers; it organizes and names the experience you have.
What Dopplio does not do: it does not search for internship postings or apply for you. That is still your university's job board and the portals.
